personality; Young Arthur isn't exactly what most would consider “King” material. Heck, he doesn't even want to be King. He's quite clumsy and tends to trip when he's not paying attention, and his writing and etiquette are absolutely atrocious. He's quite shy, and he doesn't really know how to stand up for himself either. Arthur is afraid he'll get in trouble for “popping off” if he speaks his mind, and he's more often depressed than cheerful. He relies on Merlin and Archimedes for support and help in decision making, because let's face it – he doesn't know a single thing about running a country.
Despite his many flaws, Arthur also has his many strengths. He's a kind-hearted boy who means well, even if everything he does doesn't turn out the way he wants it to. He speaks gently and as polite as he knows how to be, and he truly does value an education, though it sometimes seems he's more interested in war games than learning at times. Arthur will be a great King someday, the greatest King Britain has ever known.
history; Arthur is the illegitimate son of King Uther Pendragon by Igraine, widow of Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall. His father first laid eyes on Igraine at a banquet, where he and Gorlois were celebrating a glorious victory. Uther became enamored with her, and soon afterwards, Gorlois sent Igraine to Tintagel Castle, while he was besieged by Uther in a different town. Upon consulting Merlin, the old wizard used his magic to transform Uther into Gorlois's likeness; thus, Uther was able to gain access to not only Tintagel, but Igraine as well. He went to her that night and slept with her, causing her to conceive Arthur. The next morning, it was discovered that Gorlois had been killed.
Igraine and Uther eventually married. For his own protection, the infant Arthur was taken away from his parents by Merlin and brought to Sir Ector's castle, where Ector adopted him and raised him alongside Kay, unknowing of the boy's true identity all the while. Igraine died soon afterwards (some say from grief), and Uther eventually took ill. Despite his poor health, the King went to battle with the Saxons. Though he came out the victor, Uther met his end when he drank from a spring the Saxons had poisoned near Verulamium. With no heir apparent, Kings and nobles began to fight for the Crown. Wars were waged and many lives were lost in the pursuit of who'd become King. Legend says that God sent the miraculous sword Excalibur from Heaven to resolve the matter, placing in a blessed anvil on a stone in a churchyard. Upon the hilt was inscribed these words:
Whoso pulleth out this sword
Of this stone and anvil
Is rightwise King
Born of England
Many tried to pull Excalibur from the anvil, but all who tried failed. Thus, all gave up, and the sword became forgotten, fading into legend. Meanwhile, Arthur grew older, and as most boys who hailed from nobility were, was made a page on his seventh birthday. He found joy in practicing with wooden swords and riding a wooden horse. Arthur's dream was to become a knight, but his dream was often deterred with Ector and Kay's constant heckling, making him help the scullery maid cook and wash dishes. If Arthur disobeyed, or if he spoke when not asked to, he was given “demerits” and given even more chores to do. The boy didn't let this deter him though, and as time passed, he grew even older. “Wart,” as he had always been nicknamed by Ector and Kay, was now 12 years old.
The Page always remained optimistic of the fact that he'd soon become a squire, despite his life being a living hell. One day, while attending Kay on the hunt, Arthur accidentally fell from an old tree branch and scared off Kay's quarry. The older boy would've given Arthur a sound thrashing had the boy not run off into the forest to find Kay's arrow (as well as save himself). While wandering about, he noticed the arrow stuck in a tree. When he climbed a tree and tried to extend himself far enough to reach the arrow, he fell through the roof of Merlin's house and landed in a chair. Merlin had foresaw Arthur's arrival, but it'd been so long since he'd seen the boy that he'd forgotten who the boy was. The two became reacquainted and it was here that Arthur also met Archimedes, Merlin's long-time owl friend.
After serving Arthur tea and cakes, as well as showing him some of his magic, the two set off for Ector's castle, as Merlin was hell-bent on becoming the boy's tutor. Arthur deserved a decent education, and the old wizard was going to give it to him. Ector and Kay quickly punished Arthur and weren't exactly the welcoming committee. If Merlin hadn't shown them a bit of what he could do, they probably would've run him through (though we all know Merlin would never let that sort of thing happen). As time passed, Arthur's life was divided between his education and his Page duties. Ector and Kay didn't think the boy needed to be learned, and became angered whenever Arthur returned home late. He got to be a fish and a squirrel before the day he and Merlin came back home to be greeted with utmost hatred. As Ector talked down to Merlin, the boy stood up in his teacher's defense, only to be denied his dream as a Squire and sent off to clean an entire room's worth of dirty dishes.
They might as well have killed Arthur right then and there. His dreams were shattered, and really, all he wanted was to die. Merlin appeared and tried to cheer the boy up, and was luckily able to convince him to resume his education. A spell upon the dishes and cleaning supplies let Arthur and Merlin escape once again. This time, Merlin and Archimedes had an argument over how the boy was to be taught, and in the end, Merlin let Archimedes tutor Arthur. Arthur tried to write, but he obviously wasn't very good at it, and he was taught about the world and things that would happen to it and mankind in the future. Upon a failed experiment with an airplane, Arthur began to daydream that he was a bird, a bird that longed to be set free. He got his wish, for Merlin transformed him into a sparrow. Oh, how excited Arthur was! The old wizard tried to teach Arthur about the mechanics of a bird's wing and flight, but Archimedes argued with this too, so it was the owl who taught his pupil to fly. Arthur rather enjoyed flying, but after pursuit by a hawk, he fell through Madam Mim's chimney and into the soot. She tried to demonstrate her dark magic for Arthur before transforming into a cat and chasing the poor boy around the cottage. She would've eaten him had Merlin not arrived just in the knick of time.
Angered by his presence (and for spoiling her fun), Mim challenged Merlin to a Wizards' Duel. Arthur watched from the sidelines with Archimedes as the two transformed into various animals and tried to best one another. Mim would've won when she became a dragon had Merlin not become a germ and infected her with a terrible disease. The victor, Merlin and Arthur returned to the castle. Later that year, Christmas came. Sir Pelinore, a friend of Sir Ector, came to visit. He revealed at the Christmas feast that a jousting tournament was being held in London on New Year's Day to bring forth all potential heirs. The winner would be crowned the new King. A change of plans came in order when the scullery maid came and announced that Hobbs, Arthur's replacement Squire, had come down with the mumps, and with no one else available, Ector gave his adoptive son his place back.
New Year's Day soon came about, and Kay had already been knighted by this time. Arthur ran to see Merlin and tell him the big news, but Merlin was furious that the boy had given up his education to become a Squire. Arthur went on the defensive, and as such, his tutor became so angry that he cast a spell and sent himself into the 20th century, to Bermuda. The boy felt bad about what he'd done, but had no time to think on it, as he had to hurry back to the tournament grounds. In his excitement, Arthur had forgotten Kay's sword, and upon revealing his mistake to Ector and Kay, was sent off to retrieve it. Arriving at the inn where they were staying, the boy found the door locked (the innkeeper had gone off to watch the tournament), and he went into despair. What if he couldn't find another sword in time? He didn't even want to think of what his punishment would be then.
Lucky for Arthur, however, he noticed a sword stuck in an anvil on a stone in a churchyard. He and Archimedes rushed to it, and while the old owl was wary of it, Arthur had to get a sword. He quickly pulled Excalibur from the stone and rushed back to the tournament grounds. Upon presenting the Sword to Kay, Ector noticed it was Excalibur, the long forgotten sword from Heaven. Everyone thought Arthur was lying when he said he pulled it from the anvil, and upon his insistence that he wasn't lying, Ector grabbed the boy by the collar and dragged him off back to the churchyard. Sticking the Sword back into place, he cleared the way for Arthur to pull it once again. As the boy tried to do so, Kay pushed him out of the way and tried to do so himself. Others tried as well, but Pelinore and another man stood up for Arthur and everyone let him try again. This time, Arthur once more pulled Excalibur from the anvil, and as such, was rightful King of England.
That very day, he was taken to the palace of his father and crowned, and thus, the reign of King Arthur began. Arthur didn't entertain the thought of being King, however (he still wanted to become a knight), and as such, tried to run away. But that would only bring back the chaos that had ensued over a decade before, and the throne was rightfully Arthur's by blood anyway. His wishes to have Merlin back were granted, as Merlin had heard the boy's cries for help and came as soon as he could. He was most joyful that his prediction of Arthur being King had come true, and his reassurance was the only thing that kept Arthur from forfeiting the Crown.

role-play; Arthur had come with Merlin to the park, to get a break from his studies -- a vacation of sorts, if you will. It was something Arthur did on a daily basis. He'd several hours of class, then several hours of study period. It was nice to get out of the castle for once. And it was without say that Arthur was quite excited. But he also didn't know what to expect in this modern-day world.
Somehow, the young boy had gotten separated from his teacher upon entrance to the park. He was wandering about, lost as Hansel and Gretel. His blue eyes wandered about his surroundings, trying to figure out where on Earth he was. This place reminded him of England, for there was a large castle in the very center, and some of the architecture was like the houses he saw in London. He came upon a large sign, what looked like to be a map. Now, Arthur was slightly illiterate (he'd been improving under Merlin's tutorship), and he had a hard time trying to read the blasted thing. Arthur followed the diagram and saw the castle in the center. He read the word out loud. "Fantasyland." he said. Now where was that?
He scratched his head and left the sign, beginning to walk again. Arthur felt lone, and strange enough, wherever he was in Fantasyland, there didn't seem to be anyone around save him. It was starting to send chills down his spine. He found himself in an empty square. He leaned against a wall and placed his hand to his forehead. "I'm in an awful pickle..." he said.
