Character's Personality: His remarks are sometimes stereotypically Hawaiian Surfer, but he actually plays a bigger part than most people would give him credit for. The themes are varied, get a little more complicated, and can actually be taken in many different ways.
Usually soft-spoken, he appears to be a serene, uneventful character. But those are the precise qualities that make him loveable. He does not traditionally have a nemesis as other characters within the movie, which provides very little information about how he’d react to certain things. Most of the following will be based on my viewpoint, and I dare hope it matches David.
As casual as he is, David's reliable presence and undeniable influence on Lilo's life seems to indicate that a father-figure is just as important as a mother-figure. Lilo is considerably more controlled and happy when David's around, and she was certainly most happy when she had both her parents at home.
Character's History: As far as David's character goes, he doesn't have a major role in the central plot, and really, his remarks are sometimes stereotypically Hawaiian Surfer, but he actually plays a bigger part than most people would give him credit for.
The themes are varied, get a little more complicated, and can actually be taken in many different ways. A lot of people have called this departure an example of how any kind of family can work just fine, but upon reflection, I actually take it as more of an example of how a family with a father and mother is so crucial for a child (in this case, Lilo) and her development. Lilo is difficult to control, and often depressed, but her spirits are lightened considerably while she's spending time with David.
Interestingly, casual as he is, David's reliable presence and undeniable influence on Lilo's life seems to indicate that a father-figure is just as important as a mother-figure. Lilo is considerably more controlled and happy when David's around, and she was certainly most happy when she had both her parents at home.
David doesn't have a nemesis in the traditional way, as he's not really a part of the overriding plot of the film. While Nani's responsibilities keep them apart, the real threat to David's happiness is actually Stitch himself, as 626 is the only thing at the moment keeping him and Nani apart.

David reluctantly pried his eyelids apart, wondering why he felt so drained. He rose from his place, remembering nothing more and nothing less of what had occurred – what brought him here in the first place.
He saw faces he recognized but they seemed more alien than ever before, for they were clad in the strangest of wear, the fashion remarkably outdated. He rose to his feet hesitantly, gaze never wavering from the mass of passing figures, all ranging in shape and size. He quietly thought to himself, puzzled - how unusually thin some women were. He was used to seeing robust frames, a lot like Nani’s.
He smiled reverently at mere thought of her and sighed like a true romantic, nearly falling over himself, feeling faint. He sought to collect his thoughts by averting his dark brown gaze to a passing lady clad in blue, with unusually wacky hair. An elderly woman, he believed, as he neared her shyly.
“If it is no trouble to you, Miss, could you tell me where I am? I don’t t’ink I’m familiar with this place at all.” He said gently, resting a hand on her tiny shoulder with a thankful smile.
She whipped around and smiled a toothless grin, eyes wandering suggestively over his muscular physique.
“You’re in Disney, young whippersnapper!” she exclaimed, leaning against his chest, drawing circles over stiff neck.
He blinked, innocent of her advances.
“Oh, t’ank you…you are very, very sweet. Is that castle yours?” He asked, pointing to Cinderella’s towering fortress.David scratched his head at her next response,
“That depends! Are you going to be my prince? Yeeeheeeheee!”
He tilted his head to the side. “Uhhh…yes?” he said carefully, oblivious to her flirting. He was simply too well-mannered to hurt her feelings anyway.
