"Of course," said Lady at once, "I'll try my best - uh - sir." She gave a shy little smile, unsure whether she should have called him that.
Lady felt a sudden need to impress him, to show that she was worthy to go on this adventure with him. She carefully walked over to the bag and bent down, sniffing it interestingly. It had a funny scent that she couldn't quite make out. What was it?

<<Sorry, I'm not sure where you are going with that>>
Basil helped to place the bag over Lady, effectively camouflaging the dog.
"Stay, Toby, stay. You won't do us any good down there, boy."
Toby barked once and then complied cheerfully, content to pass the time in seeking out a few trash cans.
The mouse detective climbed onto Lady's back, and they were ready to begin.

Lady stood very still as Basil carefully put the bag over her head, feeling a funny mix of excitment and anticipation. It would look awfully strange is someone walked by now she thought with a slight giggle.
"Are you on okay?" Lady asked as she felt a sudden light weight on the small of her back. Looking around she saw Basil ready and waiting: The adventure was soon to begin! She gave a nervous smile as she waited for his orders.

"Right. Off we go."
"Keep a steady pace and be prepared to stop at once if anyone should spot us. We wouldn't want to be seen as a moving satchel, would we?"
Basil could see perfectly through the zipper to give directions.
"Left turn. Ten paces more and there is a step down. Good, now bear to your right."

((Should we create another thread on carry on with this one? ) "Okay," said Lady a little shakily, feeling very nervous now that they were finally on their way. She had never done anything like this since she had ran away from home after horrible Aunt Sarah. Lady scrunched up her face as she thought of the unconfortable muzzle that had once been round her mouth and nozzle. The difference being of course, that Tramp always did what he did for the thrill, where as this was the solve a mystery. She smiled to herself a little as she thought of the look that would be on Tramp's face when she told him of the adventure she had been on. "Where to now?" She asked quietly, feeling like she was going to walk in to something at any moment.

<<You started the thread, so you can decide if it needs a new beginning or not>>
"Let me think a moment..." Basil was concentrating on the times he had sneaked into the tunnels and all he had seen there.
"There is the costume department...catering...trash removal...what we want is information..."
"Ah, yes, of course, Information Central, as it is called." He had learned the use of computers through a little incident in Innoventions, though he still didn't know what they were called. "A veritable font of information!"
As the mouse came to that conclusion, a trio of security guards entered the hall some ten feet in front of them.

((Okey dokey. ) "What's a computer centre?" Asked Lady quietly and automatically craning her neck even though she could see nothing. Just then she stopped in her tracks. Perking up her nose, she sniffed around, trying to figure out what she could smell. Her senses had picked up a particular scent... A scent of a human, more than one in fact! That was it! And they were close... "Basil," she whispered, "Is there... Are there humans around here? Can you see any?" She felt worried - what if they'd been hiding and had seen a bag moving around on it's own?

"Hssst! Don't move!" he whispered. Peering out of the bag, Basil watched the human trio move closer to their position.
Would they even notice the bag? If they stooped to pick it up, all would be lost. What was wanted was a good distraction.
Suddenly, a door opened at the other end of the corridor, and a maintenance man appeared pushing a cart full of soiled laundry. Now the pair had an additional human to worry about.
"Not a sound, Miss Lady," cautioned the mouse, as the cart rumbled past them.
Just when Basil thought the janitor safely past, one of the guards stopped him. "Hey, buddy, you dropped this," he said, picking up the bag, dog, mouse and all, and heaving it into the cart.

Lady's tiny fluffy legs began to quiver as she heard voices and added footsteps nearby. This was it. They were going to get caught, she knew it. Closing her eyes as she tried to steady herself, Lady's thoughts began to run wild. What if they got kicked out and she never found Tramp or her family? What would happen then? Oh no oh no oh no...
She heard Basil's voice in her ear and she tried to find hope in his tone. Yes the cart was moving... It was moving away... They were going to make it! Yet just as Lady let out a sigh of relief, she felt someone (or was it something?) pick her up from around her navel, and with a yelp, was then thrown on to what must have been the cart.
Rolling over as she landed with a bump[/i] on to the hard wood, she stayed still with her eyes tight shut, waiting for the madness to end. As she felt the cart begin to move again she opened one eye, praying she hadn't squashed the little mouse. "Basil?" Lady whispered urgently, "Oh dear - Basil, are you OK?!"

"Oh, yes, quite. This laundry actually makes for rather a soft landing."
As they rolled along in the laundry cart, Basil made a few mental calculations.
"Let me see...the laundry facility is just to the right of those offices..." he muttered to himself. "Ha! This could be most auspicious! The laundry area is not far from our destination. This little ride ought to speed things up considerably."
Before long, the cart bumped through a double door and came to a stop.
"From the sudden increase in temperature and the amount of dampness in the air, I should say that we have reached--"
Basil never finished that statement, for the whole world suddenly tipped over on its side. Or so it seemed, as the laundry cart was emptied into a huge machine. In a tangle of sheets, Basil and Lady landed in the washer.

Lady found her way among the many lines of cloth and found Basil at last, who seemed to be figuring out something. She remained silent, not wanting to break his concentration but continued to watched him intently. She felt her fear begin to leave her as Basil spoke optomistically of this journey being a good thing.
Her ears perking up and her tail beginning to wag, Lady began to sit up with relief. As soon as this happy feeling started however, it soon went back to the former as with a gasp, Lady felt the world begin to spin as she was tipped in to on what have been the washer.
"Basil!" she cried, "Basil, what do we do?!"

Basil spoke with intensity, but not panic.
"This is no time for hysterics! We must climb out before the basin fills and we are drowned!"
Suiting action to words, the mouse struggled to extricate himself from the tangle of cloths, a feat more difficult than one might expect. Every button was an obstacle, every apron string a snare.
He heard the lid close somewhere above him, and the semi-darkness turned to absolute night.
"Faster!" Basil believed the dog was a bit nearer the exit than himself. "Don't wait for me."
What was that smell? "NaClO. Sodium hypochlorite," he mused aloud.

Lady nodded, scrambling over many shirts and skirts that were now becoming harder and harder to overcome. The water was beginning steadily rise and way her down by her long fluffy fur. She gave a quick glance over her shoulder as Basil spoke, her eyes wide with fear.
"I'm not leaving you!" She cried, hardly believing her ears, "Quick - grab my tail!" She added, hoping that it was longer now that her fur was all wet. If Basil didn't make it, she'd never forgive herself. She heard him mummer something else but there was too much going on to be able to hear, all energy was now focused on getting to the exit as fast as possible.

What an absurd way to die, thought Basil to himself. Drowned in a tub of wetwash. He wondered idly how long he could stay afloat once the agitator began to spin.
The bleach fumes were beginning to choke him when he heard the cocker spaniel's voice:
He hadn't realised she was so near at hand, what with the echoes inside this machine. The detective reached out and took hold of the dog's fur.
That was better; he could now scramble onto her back and from there to her head quite easily.
"Almost there now," he added, not at all certain it was true. "Courage, Miss Lady."
Suddenly-- *whang!* Basil's head struck the closed lid. "Ow! Confound it!" he cried through the stars whirling before his eyes.
"Here is the lid, but I can't raise it. You must push it open, and quickly."

"Oh dear!" Cried Lady as she heard Basil collide with the closed lid. He spoke however, so he hadn't been knocked out. She stared in front of her, controlling all her strength. She wasn't the strongest of dogs, she wasn't even that big. But this was there only hope.
With great courage, Lady lifted her two front paws, momentarily dipping under the water and giving an almighty push. It moved slightly but did not open.
"Oh no!" she spluttered as she dropped her paws again to come up to the surface. The water was beginning to swirl around them now, they were nearing it's end. Once the machine started, it would be over for them. No said a voice in her head, I will not go like this.
As images of Tramp and the others sprang clearly in to her mind, she closed her eyes, readying herself to dip underwater again as she pushed her whole body on to the lid, her eyes scrunched up in determination. At last, there was a sudden clunk and Lady and Basil toppled out. They were saved!
