So, I'm an animation geek. One thing I enjoy is critiquing some Non-Disney Animated works. Of course, Disney really can do no wrong. As for other studios ... well there's some awesome ones, and then there's some really awful pieces of work. Here's some of my favorites:
Anastasia [20th Century Fox/Don Bluth, 1997] - Quite possibly my favorite Non-Disney film. The animation is gorgeous, the voices are perfect, and the musical score is one of my favorites. It also turned me into a John Cusack fangirl. xD
Titan A.E [20th Century Fox/Don Bluth, 2000] - WHY DID THIS FAIL?! ;_; This is one that I consistently talk about. The animation is groundbreaking, the main character is voiced by Matt Damon (!) and it was also written in part by the guy who also worked on Atlantis [Joss Whedon]. So good, =)
Rock & Rule [Nelvana, 1983] - ALL CANADIAN GOODNESS! Foxy knows what I'm talkin' bout! Seriously, do yourselves a favor and WATCH THIS! This movie really deserves to be more well known - if you're an 80's music fan, it has all original songs by Cheap Trick, Debbie Harry, Earth Wind & Fire, and Iggy Pop. Oh, and the villain is like a love letter to Mick Jagger & David Bowie.
The Iron Giant [Warner Bros., 1999] - This is impossible not to love! It's so moving, I cry every time I watch it! I also really like the Cold War setting, which is a little different for an animated film. And I now see Vin Diesel in a whole new light [he voices the Giant ... o_0]
Cats Don't Dance [Warner Bros./Turner, 1997] - Adorable. 'Nuff said.
So, wanna share your favorites? I might even put up my list of awful ones, depending on how this thread goes. Because believe me, there are many, xDD

My all time favorite non-Disney animated film is Balto (Ablination/Univeral, 1995). Everything about this film is amazing. The character animation is stunning, the story is heartwarming and the music . . . *swoons*. James Horner's score is awe-inspiring. Unfortunately, the introduction of 3-D animation trumpted any kind of success it could have had. Definately one of the best films ever!!!! Here's some stills:

*cough*Jim is so much hotter than Cale*cough*
But Matt Damon sure does have a sexy voice... Cale beats Jim there. Joseph Gordon-Levitt just can't win my heart over with Jim's voice...
And I just gotta praise Balto. As an aspiring animator, I constantly refer to that film for animal figures, bodies, and expressions.
Anastasia, is bluntly put, a masterpiece. I can't imagine how Disney didn't think of the idea first. What truly captivates me is the detail in that film. Just look at the backgrouds, the colors, then put that together with the film's score. Beautiful.
I'm a bit divided on Rock 'n Rule. I LOVED the music in this. Contrary to my generation, I took a liking to the music my parents grew up with, embracing the 70's and 80's. This movie's dialogue also never ceased to be funny. Needless to say, I love it when Mok speaks french. The drawing style creeped me out a little. I think it's how the humans-mice-things have only four fingers... And Mok's face. Mok's face is nightmare-worthy.

Interestingly, everyone in Rock & Rule is an animal. It took me a while to catch onto it. But if you listen to the Prologue sequence carefully , it says something about nuclear war killing all the humans, while dogs, cats, and rats mutated into humanoid types.
Is it me, or are all 1980's films post-apocalyptic? *Shrugs* I actually kinda like Mok's look. He reminds me of Jagger, haha.

Yeah, my bad. I meant the mutant-animals, but they kindave are the humans now.
And I also feel a little excluded... THERE ARE NO LEFTY GUITARISTS IN THE FILM!!! What about us? What about Paul Mcartney, Jimi Hendrix... the list goes on and on! Helloooo? *waves with LEFT hand*

Jim: *Rolls eyes* "Suuure, he gets ink, but can you deny the awesome punkness of the ponytail and earring?"
*secretly conspires to get a tatoo*
Ever notice how similar Jim and Cale's hairstyles are? That cut is soooo cute...

Yeah, *swoons* I also think Cale and Dimitri look alike. Of course, they're both works of Don Bluth. so that explains a lot. When it comes to Don Bluth, his work is sort of hit-or-miss for me. Of course, Anastasia and Titan are gorgeous, but then some of his mid-90's stuff isn't really to my taste. I just really dislike anything between All Dogs Go to Heaven and Anastasia. Especially Rock-a-Doodle - no offense to any fans, but I really don't like that one. Or Thumbelina. Other than that, his other stuff is good good

My favorite non-Disney animated film would have to be Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure. It's a movie that's live action but when the toys come to life it is animation. It's a trippy movie, but it's awesome all the same. Also, if you see it, you'll see it shares a resemblence to Toy Story. The owner gets a new toy and it's taken by pirates and the Raggedies set off to find her and meet up with a camel who shares a resemblence to Eeyore. Also, one of the former Disney animators did a character. That was Art Babbitt who created the camel. The movie was shown on Disney Channel long ago. Also, it's a big musical. My most favorite song in it is Raggedy Andy's "I'm No Girl's Toy" NO GIRL'S TOY: ANDY: I'll tell you something, I'm getting pretty sick and tired of all the dumb things that go on around here. This is no place for a strong, tough, and terrific boy like myself. GRANDPA: You're strong, tough, and terrific? ANDY: Well, I could be, if I didn't have to hang around this nursery and be a girl's doll. Well you can Push me, shove me, turn me around, but I'm No girl's toy You can tie me, toss me upside or down, but I'm No girl's toy I sing my own sweet melody I go my own sweet way I won't beg 'round tomorrow For the kind of affection that was free today Oh you can squeeze me, tease me, say I'm you're own, but I'm No girl's toy You can charm me, chase me, follow me home I won't be coy You may not like it much But I'm my own best boy And not some sugar-and-spicey Lacey and nicey Sissy you're gonna enjoy No I'm no girl's toy ANN: Oh, Andrew, you're just terrible. SUSIE: A regular Huck Finn ANDY: Wouldn't you be? Pushed around and squashed up by a bunch of girls! GRANDPA: You tell 'em, sonny! BARNEY: Yeah! Tell 'em...uhh...tell 'em what? MAXIE-FIXIT: What do you mean? Tell the truth! TOPSY: What truth? ANDY: Too many GIRLS! ANN: Stop it! You'll hurt yourself! ANDY: Hurt nothin'! I've been hurt enough! Packages landing on my head! Tea parties! Dancing lessons! FEMALE TOYS: You're just crazy! ANDY: I'm no girl's toy! SUSIE: Maybe lazy! ANDY: Watch it, sister! You say I'm heaps of trouble And I'm heading for a fall Well no rag, no bone, no hank of hair Is gonna make me do what I don't wanna do at all So squeeze me, tease me, say I'm you're own, but I'm No girl's toy Oh charm me, chase me, follow me home Forget it, sweetie! You may not like it much But I'm my own best boy And not some sugar-and-spicey Lacey and nicey Sissy you're gonna enjoy No I'm no girl's toy Not me!

Art Babbit? No way! xD A lot of Non-Disney movies have a connection to Disney! Like The Iron Giant, which was directed by Brad Bird. He works at Pixar now, and directed The Incredibles. And Cats Don't Dance was by a former Disney animator, I believe, and the music was written by Randy Newman - now he's writing the music for The Princess and the Frog. And then of course, Don Bluth organized a big walkout on Disney in the 80's during The Fox and the Hound's production to start up his own studio. Plus, the director of Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron was Richard Rich, who left Disney to do The Swan Princess and *sighs begrudgingly* The King and I. Funny thing is, The King and I was on The CW the other day. Ugh, it's awful. I was expecting the 1950's version, but instead I got Richard Rich's. He basically ruined Rodgers and Hammerstein's beautiful work. Really, don't watch it. Chances are you will have much better things to do. D< [Yes, I'm aware that I just gave all of you a crash-course in animation history. I do that a lot. ]
