Cornelius slowly smiled but said nothing, and the significant distance between them grew smaller in his mind. His blue eyes drifted to the grass beneath his feet, his expression shy and unusual. In the silence lingered suspense as he raised his eyes slightly to meet her soft lilac ones. They were so wide and lovely; her curling lashes made it harder for poor, confused Cornelius to resist them.
"Do you think so, really?" he looked at her levelly, his voice quiet and timid. Without his constant fumbling, the blueness of his eyes appeared much more sincere rather than fearful. "I…I -- it was an honor, Your Highness.” He wanted to say more than what he had permitted himself to utter. For the first time in his life, he gained such a sincere, beautiful acknowledgment, without even the slightest wrinkle of a nose or the consternation of a critic. He no longer felt as if he was standing before a significant crowd demonstrating his latest inventi – failure. Now…now he felt like he was standing before a friend.
“You don’t need to thank me, I assure you. I should be the one…”
Despite her beautifully delicate physique, she still had managed to press a kiss to his cheek. She was now in his arms though she had pulled back. This time he leaned in to near the Princess, almost hypnotized, until the grateful inventor slightly drew back and rested a hand on her small shoulder. He heard the slight crunch of the ground under his feet as he shifted a bit, cursing inwardly for not having kissed her when he had the chance so.
“...Thanking,” he paused breathlessly, taking her hand into his, “you.”
He looked down silently.
“Forgive me.” He uttered silently, not knowing why he felt the need to apologize.
