"Okay, the food's ready. Who wants a hot dog or a hamburger?"
Using a long (to her) spatula, Gadget plopped a weiner into a bun for Arthur.
"Basil, I made you a cheeseburger. Hope that's okay."
"What about you, Edna? Oh, there's chips and potato salad, too. But I didn't make the potato salad, I bought it."
So far, everybody seemed to be having a good enough time.

Basil greatly accepted the hamburger with cheese, a bit surprised to note that there was no ham in it. Of course, there was no dog in a hot dog either.
Nor did he see any chips, as Gadget had mentioned. (To an Englishman, 'chips' are french fries.)
So he contented himself with the very excellent melon, eating it properly with a knife and fork. Basil never could understand the fascination Americans had with using their fingers.
Meanwhile, Toby eagerly gobbled up the watermelon Edna threw to him. It wasn't precisely what he wanted, but any food would do in a pinch.
He frisked about the others looking for more treats, until Basil heaved a hot dog onto the ground for him.
"Dreadfully sorry if Toby is a nuisance. That ought to quiet him for a bit."

"Would anybody like dessert? I made cupcakes."
It was only a cake mix from a box, but the cupcakes had come out okay. And the red-white-and-blue sprinkles on top were very festive.
If nobody else wanted any, at least Toby would be glad to have some.

Edna took one of the cupcakes to go with her cheeseburger and chips as she sat down ready to eat. "Oh so magnificent and the cupcakes look nicely done darling" She grinned as she took a bite of the cupcake.

While they all enjoyed their luncheon, Basil observed Edna keenly.
"I perceive, Miss Edna, that you are possessed of an artistic temperment. Would your talents lie, by any chance in the realm of fashion? Or, as the French say, haute coutoure?"
Observation and deduction were Basil's favorite small talk.

Edna was taken aback by the detective mouses skill of deduction and observation after all she was a fashionista but like no other. "Well now, you have made a pretty good observation and i concur that I am a fashion expert briliant observation."

Basil would never admit just how pleased he was with such high praise.
"It was nothing at all. Child's play, really."
But his contented expression revealed his complete satisfaction with Edna's estimation of his talents.

"If everybody's finished eating, we could play a game or something. I filled all these water balloons before you got here."
Gadget pointed to a bunch of balloons wriggling and jiggling in a bucket. Looking at them reminded her that she meant to make jell-o for the picnic, but forgot.
