"It was her walk, mostly, quite unlike any I have yet observed. That and the scent of salt water. She gave one the distinct impression of being not altogether human."
"H-her walk?" Eric asked, willing his voice not to shake. He tried not to chuckle as he remembered the first time they'd really truly met. She had been a little unsteady on her feet, since she had just been turned into a human. It vexed him..how much she had gone through just to see him, let alone be with him. She worried him sometimes, with her recklessness..but if she hadn't done what she had did, he wouldn't have a wonderful wife, daughter, or family.
Eric waved his hand dismissively at the mention of salt water. "Well, we do live in a palace next to the beach. She enjoys swimming as do I."

Basil was not fooled for an instant by Eric's dismissive attitude. No matter, he would eventually puzzle out the mystery.
Meanwhile, Toby was just preparing to ask Max his opinion on flea powder, when a something across his field of vision some nine or ten yards away.
"Squirrel!" he barked, and was off instantly in pursuit.
Sadly, Basil was still holding onto his end of Toby's leash. In mid-ponder, the detective was jerked mercilessly off his feet. He hurtled through the air as the hound dashed this way and that after the squirrel.

"Squirrel!"
Max jumped up excitedly. "Where?" He started running after Toby.
Eric watched as Toby dragged Basil off in another direction. Suddenly, Max started following. "Come on, Max! Get back here!" He sprinted after the energetic sheepdog.

"Toby, stop! Stay! Desist!" shouted the mouse as he was borne along. And Toby did stop, but only because the squirrel had run up a tree out of reach.
Toby stopped, but Basil didn't. The mouse's momentum carried him SPLAT! into the back of Toby's head. Which was harder than one would suppose.
"How many times must I tell you?" thundered Basil, rubbing his injured limbs. "Squirrels are our friends." Indeed, relations between mice and squirrels were quite cordial, a fact which Toby seemed unable to grasp.
Sighing, he said to Eric, "It seems I can do nothing with this animal."

"It seems I can do nothing with this animal."
Eric chuckled once he could see that Basil was okay. "Aw, don't feel bad. Max can be just as bad sometimes. Isn't that right, Max?" The sheepdog stared up at Eric sheepishly. "He did completely attack my wife with his tongue once. Took me five minutes to pull that knucklehead off. Nearly scared her to death, too."
Max looked at Toby. "I couldn't help it, she smelled good. And I think she liked me."

"I almost had that squirrel," said Toby, and he actually believed it. The squirrel, on the other hand, shook his fist at Basil and shouted something about a menace.
"They really like to be licked. Who wouldn't? Here, I will show you."
With that, the hound turned suddenly and planted a big wet one on Basil, and then on Eric with his lolling tongue.
"He tastes good, too," said Toby to Max. "A little salty."

"I almost had that squirrel,"
"Nice try." commented Max in a friendly manner.
"They really like to be licked. Who wouldn't? Here, I will show you."
"Exactly!" The sheepdog paused in thought. "Well..except for Grimsby. Sometimes he gets annoyed when I lick him for some reason." Who didn't like getting licked?
Eric's eyes widened as the squirrel started shaking its fist at Basil. Before he could say anything, Toby licked him. "Haha! I see your dog's rather affectionate as well." The Italian said, chuckling before petting the other dog gently.

"Rather," answered Basil, wiping off the drool with his handkerchief. "A bit too affectionate. And undisciplined."
With that, Basil prepared to demonstrate. "Toby, come."
To Basil's great astonishment, the hound came as instructed. "Sit, Toby," he continued. "Lie down." Toby performed each command happily, gazing adoringly at his master all the while.

"A bit too affectionate. And undisciplined."
"Aww..I'm sure he's not as bad as Max." Eric replied with a chuckle. He watched as Basil gave Toby commands, and the dog executed them perfectly. "He seems well-trained to me. Just watch Max. Max, here boy!" He whistled softly.
Max watched Toby do tricks for his master. "Show off." he said to himself. Just then he heard Eric calling him, and ran to him excitedly, licking him mercilessly.
"Alright, okay boy, I love you too." Eric said while laughing and attempting to get the sheepdog off of him. "Down, boy. Okay, want to play a little catch?" He withdrew Max's favorite purple ball from his pocket. "Go fetch!" He threw it a ways away, and the sheepdog retrieved it exuberently. "Good boy." Eric smiled and petted his head affectionately.

Basil was still puzzling over the fact of Toby's obedience when the hound spotted the ball in Eric's hand.
"Ball! Ball!" he woofed excitedly, leaping up and dancing on his hind legs.
"Ah, yes, Toby is uncommon fond of chasing a ball," answered the detective, not at all envious of the impromptu bath Eric had just received.
