Peter couldn't hide his disappointment as he felt her hand leave his face and instead saw Wendy cross her arms huffily at him, showing yet again her bossy grown up way. She was going to be older than him soon, and it stung Peter like a thousand knives. He had to keep his composure though. "You tell me," he replied, crossing his arms in turn and lifting an eyebrow up at her. "Would you even want to see me again?" If he thought that was painful however, the next thing she said froze Peter to the core. He simply gazed at her as Wendy blurted out those words to him. It was him... She... She felt...
"Me?" He said weakly and pointing slightly to his chest. "Not.. Not Jim?" But wait... Was this the catch. She had felt... But now she felt for Jim instead... He had banished her and ruined it all. It was his fault he was losing his Wendy...
There seemed to be a long silence as they stared looked at one another, both their eyes huge in the setting sun. As Wendy looked away to rub the tears from her face, Peter quickly did the same so she wouldn't notice. All was quiet apart from the sound of a bird singing high in the trees and the slight bustle of leaves as the cooling breeze blew around them. Peter looked up to the sky for a moment and breathed deeply before looking back down to face the young girl. He tilted his head to the side very slightly as he gazed at her, simply taking in everything she was, everything that made him... Made him... Feel.
He took several gulps and sallowed hard as he very, very slowly lifted his own hand. A sudden flashback rushed in to his mind as he thought of their dance by the fairies, where he had also raised a hand for her to take. But something was different this time. He wasn't holding it out for her to take. His hand was hovering, shakily near her cheek as he seemed to be struggling with himself on what to do next. He stared down at her lips before moving up to her eyes and very, very slowly moved his hand an inch closer so it cupped her face gently.
The touch of her skin made him tighten slightly; this was so... Wrong but then, why did it feel right? A part of his mind was screaming in protest, he was just a boy, he did not feel, he did not fall in love, he just had fun, he was just happy, he was in far too deep...
After a few moments, Peter let his hand relax slightly on her face and softly rubbed away a trickling tear with his thumb. The silence seemed to be pressing down on his ears as he felt his heart banging so loudly he was sure she could hear. He pressed his lips hard together for a moment before ever so slightly moving his head down towards hers to reach her lips. He wasn't even sure what he was doing or why he was doing it. A hidden kiss... To show her without ever needing to tell her... Forever unspoken were his feelings for a girl who would grow on without him.
It wasn't until they were centimeters apart that he stopped to stare deeply in to her eyes and although with all his heart did he want to fill the tiny gap left between them, he knew that it would hurt him all the more when he finally saw her with Jim if he were to kiss her now. He felt something breaking inside but would not admit it to himself as he replied in barely a whisper. "I will."
