"Thank you so much, Panchito," Bambi said with a smile while looking up at Panchito. Then he prepared himself to say what he wanted to say on the card by dictating the following:
"Dear Mother:
From the beginning of my life You've always been there for me, Guiding my every step And encouraging me to just be me.
I think of you when I'm up I think of you when I'm down Just thinking of your smiling face Turns my frowns upside down.
From that day you left me I've learned to be braver and have more fun So that in my mind, you would say, 'I'm proud to have you for a son.'
I want you to know that Though we may be apart Let me just say that You will always shine in my heart.
I love you so much.
Your loving son, Bambi"

It was a long message and Panchito wrote slowly, so it took him a while to get it all down. But the vacquero was not unmoved by the simple yet heartfelt sentiment of the fawn.
Finally, he straightened and held the card up for Bambi to see. "Is done, my friend. What do you think of it?"

Bambi took a look at the message Panchito wrote for him on the care and (due to his minimal ability to read) carefully read the words on it to see how it sounded in his head. The message itself seemed to flow well and worked well enough for even his mother to appreciate it if she were right there listening to him say all that. "That's perfect, Panchito," he said, looking up at Panchito after he was done reading. "Thank you. If my mother were here right now, she would have really loved it."

Panchito felt he'd done Bambi a good turn, but wasn't too sure what to do next.
"Do you want to keep this then?" he asked, indicating the card. "Then you can read it whenever you feel solitario...lonesome."
Smiling, he gave the fawn an affectionate noogie.

Bambi giggled to himself at his liking to recieving the noogie. He could tell that Panchito certainly had a certain friendly affection that he displayed well toward the adorable fawn.
The suggestion Panchito offered seemed like a good idea, but as he drew a breath to try and answer, he paused briefly to think over how he could really carry the card around with him. Obviously, he had no pockets to stuff it in nor hands to hold it and carry it. "You know, I would, except I don't know how I could carry it. Maybe you could strap it around me and I could show it to my dad the next time I see him when I get home."

Hmmm..that was true. Bambi had no pockets.
"You could carry it in your mouth. But then it will get wet y desordenado. Maybe you can wear it around your neck."
Panchito had seen something in the gift shop that might work. He dashed inside and quickly returned with one of those lanyards los turistas use to carry their pins.
"You see? The card can hang on this..." he clipped it onto the end as he spoke, "and it will hang like so."
The rooster hung the whole thing on Bambi's neck, then stood back to have a look at it. "So, what do you think, eh?"

Bambi watched as Panchito went off to get the lanyard and assist in strapping it around his neck. Allowing himself to sense how comfortable it would feel to get around without a problem, he nodded to himself and said, "Yeah, this'll do just fine. Thanks!"
Remembering then about how Panchito was writing a card for his own mother, he wondered if he could somehow pay back for what Panchito did to help him by asking, "Since you helped me with writing a card for my mother, do you think maybe I could help you in writing a card or two? I may not be able to write myself, but I'd like to help."

I may not be able to write myself, but I'd like to help.
Panchito had almost forgotten his own card, which he hadn't finished yet.
He could sure use some help, as he found writing a tedious job. Not that Panchito was stupid, just terribly under-educated.
He sighed as he sat down and pulled out his pencil once more. "I can use some help with the words sometimes. I do no remember how to spell 'habitación.' Is it 'i' or 'e' after the 'b'?"

A blank look of uncertainty spread across Bambi's face. "Hah-bih...tah-cee-ohn? What's that?" he asked with wonder. It was obvious that he had never learned Spanish, so hearing a word like habitacion seemed very new to him, in addition to knowing how to spell. "Erm, I guess with an 'i,'" he said with a shrug of his shoulders, trying his best to use a bit of common sense in how the word should sound and look.

"Gracias." Panchito never looked up, never even thought about whether or not a fawn could spell, much less spell en Espanol.
"Ah, terminado," he said, finally straightening up and laying down the pencil. "Now to put this en el correo...the mail box."

"I bet your mother will really like that when she sees it," Bambi said with a grin as he watched Panchito finish up on his card. "I know that my mother may never see mine for real, but maybe somewhere out there, she would see it in some special way. Maybe she has seen the card already and is happy, knowing that I still think about her and did something nice for her. I thank you again for helping me."

"You are very welcome."
