"Um...let's see..." She cast her eyes around Fantasyland . "How about...that one."
Gadget pointed to a ride with pirate ships for cars. " 'Peter Pan's Flight' it's called."
She'd had some dealings with pirates in the past, and they were a pretty dangerous bunch, but this was only pretend.

" 'Peter Pan's Flight' it's called."
Eric squinted over at the ride. "Okay." He answered and followed Gadget. He noted that the ride vehicles were shaped like pirate ships. The ride seemed exciting enough. Eric had had a few run-ins with pirates in the past, and had escaped in one piece, but his father hadn't been as fortunate. But he was fine with the ride--any ship reminded him of the sea.

Gadget climbed into the boat-shaped vehicle. Technically, a boat is a vehicle. But these boats fly, or at least, they pretend to fly. So, do they still count as boats?
These musings were interrupted by the start of the ride. They entered a dark room looking down on the streets of a city. The buildings were tiny, even to Gadget's rodent eyes, giving the illusion that they were high in the sky.
"Oh, it's London. There's Big Ben."
Turning to Eric, she continued mercurially, "Did you know that Big Ben isn't the name of the tower? It's actually a bell inside the tower. It's beautiful!"

Eric boarded the vehicle and stared down at the city streets. He looked over at Gadget as she said something.
"Oh, it's London. There's Big Ben."
"Wow, they're pretty thorough." He'd been to London himself, and sure enough the model definitely resembled the city.
"Did you know that Big Ben isn't the name of the tower? It's actually a bell inside the tower. It's beautiful!"
"Really? I didn't know that..that's very interesting." Eric replied with a smile. "Yes, it is, isn't it? I've been to London..it's where I found my dog, Max." He explained, remembering how he'd rescued him from his vicious owner. Who'd want to hurt Max?

"You have a dog? What breed is he?"
Gadget was having a great time on the ride, until she spotted the figure of a pixie in one of the displays. The little mouse's smile turned into a frown.
"That fairy there reminds me of a real fairy I met. Except this one didn't have blonde hair. Boy, she was really mean. And for no reason at all."
Thinking about Vidia was enough to spoil a person's whole day.

"You have a dog? What breed is he?"
"Yep. I named him after the great Roman general. He's an Old English Sheepdog." Eric replied.
"That fairy there reminds me of a real fairy I met. Except this one didn't have blonde hair. Boy, she was really mean. And for no reason at all."
Eric raised an eyebrow. Gadget had met a fairy? Then again, he shouldn't be surprised. He was married to a mermaid and had battled a giant talking squid/lady. "Well, I'm sure not all fairies are mean."

"Yeah, I guess you're right about that." Gadget had forgotten Rosetta, a much nicer fairy she'd met briefly.
"I'm sorry I said that. It wasn't very nice of me to think all fairies were alike. Just because one is bad."
She felt truly ashamed of herself. Gadget usually gave people the benefit of the doubt. But that Vidia just really got her goat.

"I'm sorry I said that. It wasn't very nice of me to think all fairies were alike. Just because one is bad."
Eric nodded. His father-in-law had gone through a similar change of heart. Since his wife had been murdered by human pirates, he had fostered a hate of all humans. But when he saw how much his daughter and Eric were in love, slowly that hatred melted away. It reminded Eric of his similar dislike of pirates. "Oh, look, a pirate ship." He pointed over at Hook's ship.

Gadget gazed at the pirate ship Eric indicated. "That pirate with the hook looks pretty scary," she said with a little shudder.
"Only I feel sorry for him, having a hook for a hand and all."

"That pirate with the hook looks pretty scary,"
Now that she mentioned it, he did look rather sinister. Eric examined the pirate again to see that he had a hook as opposed to a hand.
"Only I feel sorry for him, having a hook for a hand and all."
"Do you know how why he has a hook instead of a hand?" Eric asked curiously.

"No, I never saw him before," she answered with a little shrug.
"Maybe he lost his hand from something awful, like leprosy."
Why else would someone have a hook instead of a hand? It couldn't be a fashion statement.

"No, I never saw him before,"
"Oh..well, maybe they just put it in the ride to make it more exciting." Eric replied. He had encountered pirates first hand, and he couldn't recall one having a hook for a hand. Wooden legs, yes, but not hooks instead of hands. Or did he? He didn't quite remember, that was over fourteen years ago.
"Maybe he lost his hand from something awful, like leprosy."
"Hmm, maybe." He responded. If so, that was a shame. "I sort of feel bad for him too if that's the case."

"Especially when he'd getting eaten up by a crocodile!" Yes, that was the final tableau of the ride, the pirate captain fighting for his life in a crocodile's jaws. "That's gross! What an awful thing to put in a nice ride."
Gadget sensed that Eric was a kindred spirit. His kindness, even toward wicked old pirates, was not the norm. The little mouse found it heart-warming.
<<This is all for me. I'm off on vacation 'til well after the new site starts up. Hope to see you on the other side.>>
