<<Oh, Toby's brave, all right. But a little out of his depth>>
The evil cat seemed to grow larger and more menacing as the fight progressed. Although first blood belonged to Toby, he soon received several bites and deep scratches himself.
He couldn't back down, even if it meant his life. Determined to give a good accounting of himself for Basil's sake, the hound tried again to fasten onto his opponent. He bit down on some portion of Lucifer's anatomy and began to shake his head, worrying the cat as violently as he could. <<'worrying' is the way dogs fight by shaking their prey back and forth>>
Meanwhile, the two mice together succeeded in escaping from the vase. When it tipped over, Basil found himself imediately pulled along toward the exit door.
Behind him the detective could now hear the growls and snarls from the two combatants. Hearing Toby let out a particularly loud yelp, Basil risked a look over his shoulder. The sight caused him to skid to a stop just shy of safety.
The snarling tangle of limbs and fur was difficult to decifer as each animal struggled to inflict the most damage on the other.
But it soon became apparent that the dog was nearing the end of his strength. His movements were slower and growing unsteady, and Basil watched inhorror as his pet dropped back slightly, panting and bleeding.

((Awwww. Poor little Toby. If he needs medical care after this, Esmeralda will be happy to take care of him. She loves animals.))
Lucifer suddenly felt sharp teeth bite down some of the skin of his neck. It started bleeding, and then he was worried violently - in every sense of the word. ;D
In the corner of his eye, he could see the two mice running across the floor, trying to escape. This made him so furious that he span around, planting the sharp claws of all his four paws in Toby's face, while meowing viciously and hissing. He especially tried to hit Toby's eyes, ears and snout with is claws, knowing those were fragile for a dog.
Soon he noticed the dog was nearing the end of his strength. His movements were slower and growing unsteady, and he was panting and bleeding. Lucifer's yellow demonic eyes were glaring towards the dog, and he puffed himself up to be three times his size. Once again he lifted his paw, claws unsheathed, to attack the dog. The shadow of the attacking cat fell on the wall of the flickering light from the fireplace.

Toby had given his all to allow his master to escape. But now he hadn't even the strenght left to growl. If he could rest a moment or two, perhaps he could attack again. But it didn't look as though the dog would have that chance.
Basil couldn't run off and leave Toby to his fate. No, not even at the risk of his own life. Mouse's best friend deserved better than that. But what to do?
The monstrous cat was wounded, yes, but Basil couldn't tell just how badly. The detective might be headed to his death, but he dashed back all the same, and rolled the vase with all his might directly at the cat.
It was the only weapon he had, and a poor one, but if it did not do any damage, it might at least distract.
Basil stood ready to run, if, as he hoped, the creature left off fighting Toby and made for him again.

Lucifer was hoovering over the defeat dog. Now it was time to show this dumb-looking mutt who was the master of the universe - the CAT!!! He snickered evilly and looked down at the dog while unsheathing his razor sharp claws, ready to strike.
A tiny scratch for a cat - a HUGE scratch for all the cathood...
((I hope Neil Armstrong forgives me for ruining his quote. ;D ))
Just when he was going to finish off the dog once and for all, a rumbling noice made his ears perk up. A vase came rolling right towards him - and by the door he noticed one of the two vermins he had decided to catch for lunch.
His yellow eyes started glowing demonically, and with one giant jump he landed in front of Basil, while lunging in his general direction with his unsheathed claws.

As the huge beast closed on Basil, he saw his entire life pass before his eyes. He had but a moment to ponder how dashing he looked, and then Lucifer was upon him!
The detective had only one trump card, and he'd been saving it for the last trick. Well, if this wasn't the last trick, then what was?
Reaching into his overcoat, Basil pulled out a long, sharp thorn. He'd removed it from a lion's paw some time ago, and kept it on his person in case he ever had to remind said lion that she owed him a favor.
Now he thrust it upward, into the paw that swiftly decended on him, into the soft pad nearly to the hilt -- that is, where the hilt would be if thorns had hilts.
It must hurt like the dickens, but would it be enough to disable his nemesis?

((A thorn? AHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! I love you Basil! ;D This will be fun. What a shame you didn't aim at Lucifer's butt! But the paw is fine too ;D ;D ;D ))
Lucifer was hoovering above Basil, triumphing - at last he would have the lunch he had worked so hard to gain. He lifted his paw, and his yellow, demonic eyes were flashing in the darkness as he prepared to strike the mouse once and for all.
Then something happened that Lucifer had never expected. The mouse reached into his overcoat, and pulled out a long, sharp thorn. Before he could react - the little vermin planted the thorn into the soft pad of his paw, nearly to the hilt.
For a moment he looked at the mouse, as if he couldn't believe this was happening, that a MOUSE had defeated HIM - Lucifer in a fight. How the other cats would have laughed at him if they had seen this! He felt an immense pain rushing through his body, and he jumped 10 feet up in the air.
"MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOWWWW! OWWW! OWWW! OWWWW!!!!"
He was hopping and dancing across the floor on his back legs, while holding his wounded paw with his fresh paw. The thorn was deep into the paw, making the paw red and sore. The pain was incredible. His yellow eyes filled with tears that started falling from his eyes.

Bianca’s grip on Basil’s hand had been so tight in her fear that when he suddenly stopped she was almost pulled over backwards. Righting herself, she looked back and saw the dog and the cat savagely tearing into each other, although it was apparent that the cat was winning. She wrung her hands in worry as she glanced back to the door, however suddenly to her surprise Basil sprang away from her side, back towards the danger.
“Mr Basil!” she exclaimed in surprise, dithering uncertainly at the door as she considered whether to follow him or not, “do be careful!” Bianca’s eyes widened in fear as Lucifer leapt over the vase Basil had aimed at him, landing spryly in front of the mouse and slashing out wildly with his claws.
“No!” exclaimed the white mouse, dashing forward in a vain attempt to pull him out of danger, although there was no way she’d make it in time. She wasn’t sure how it happened, but the cat stopped at the last moment, springing into the air and howling in pain. Bianca took the chance to tug on Basil’s arm once again, pulling him away towards his injured dog so that they could get all three out before the cat recovered and came back once again.

<<Been saving that thorn since almost my first day on this site>>
Basil allowed himself the luxury of a triumphant smirk at the cat's discomfort. No pain was ever more deserved.
"Good luck trying to find a mouse to pull that thorn out."
Miss Bianca's arrival at his side once more recalled the detective to himself. They had no time for taunts, however pleasant.
"Hurry, Toby!" he said to the panting hound, and they three hurried to the exit door. The mice might pass under it, but they couldn't very well leave Toby inside.
Standing on the dog's head, Basil was able to reach the crash bar, which he pushed with all his might before the door finally yeilded.
Out in the Florida sunlight once more, Basil was just congratulating Bianca on their narrow escape, when Toby's short legs gave out. He dropped to the ground, rolled onto his side, and lay still.
Basil hadn't realized how badly hurt his hound was. "Toby!" he called frantically. "Can you hear me, lad?"
What was he to do? They couldn't carry Toby, nor could he leave him lying there. Where could they find a doctor? If only Dawson was here...

A tall, raven-haired gypsy girl was walking around in the theme park, her emerald eyes gliding over the landscape. From inside a building she heard some rumble, as if someone was fighting. Worried that someone might be in danger, she decided to check it out. She was almost run down by a huge black cat that left in a hurry.
"Huh - what was that about?" she said to herself.
She went closer to the building, and then she noticed a dog that had collapsed. Beside the dog were two mice. She had seen them before. It was Basil and Miss Bianca. Then the dog had to be Toby. Esmeralda rushed to their side, while checking her pockets. Luckily she had all her medical equipment with her.
"Basil! Miss Bianca! What has happened here?"

Basil was so distracted, he didn't even notice who was asking.
"We must find a doctor. Can you carry him? We haven't a moment to lose!"
Toby lay so still. Surely, he couldn't be...

Bianca scrambled onto the dog’s head after Basil, adding her own strength, though it wasn’t considerable, to the attempt to escape until finally the doorway burst open and allowed them to escape. She quickly ran around to the other side of the door, pushing it shut again in case Lucifer attempted to follow them once again.
“That was certainly… unexpected,” panted Bianca, leaning against the door for a moment as she got her strength back, “thank you Mr Basil. You saved my…” that was when she spotted Toby. Leaving the sentence hanging the white mouse rushed over to the dog’s side as well, concern filling her eyes as she looked at the animal’s rather considerable wounds. Fortunately for them, a familiar face approached them out of the bright midday sun.
“Miss Esmeralda!” exclaimed Bianca in pleased surprise as she recognised the girl rushing to their sides, “a foul cat attacked us. Oh if only I was larger, I’d show that cat!” She shook her head for a moment, turning her attention back to Basil and Toby once again. “We escaped but Toby here’s been hurt badly.”

Esmeralda knelt down by the wounded dog, and felt with her slender hands on his pulse. It was fluttering, but she could still feel it. Esmeralda looked around, and noticed a river floating nearby. "Running water is purer than still water. Exactly what the doctor ordered." She lifted the dog carefully up in her arms. Djali knelt down by the two mice, offering them to ride on him to the river if they wanted to. In the meanwhile, Esmeralda carried the wounded dog down to the river. She placed him on a soft patch of grass, and knelt down by the river bank. She dipped one of her scarves in the water, and started washing the cut wounds gently, at the same time she was examining them. Then she took out her arsenal of herbs and plants, placing them on the ground in front of her. "Luckily the wounds are not as serious as they first seemed to be. I will make Toby some healing oinments, to avoid the scratch wounds from getting infected. I will also have to patch up some of the deepest cuts. But the wounds will heal, and Toby will survive. He just needs a good rest when I am done with him." While she was speaking, she started stitching up the deepest cuts with neat stitches, making sure there wouldn't be any scars. ((Waiting for Basil and Miss Bianca to reply before the curing of the wounds continues ))

The distraught detective looked up, more than a little startled. It wasn't until the gypsy girl spoke that he even noticed who it was who had come to Toby's aid.
No matter; Basil would've enlisted the aid of Ratigan himself to save the dog if need be. He watched helplessly as she examined the still canine form.
Basil felt himself exhale with relief; he hadn't even realized he'd been holding his breath. He glanced at the mouse by his side. Miss Bianca had been a brick through the whole ordeal, and her sympathetic presence was much appreciated.
Never mind about the scars, Basil thought silently, he had a few of those himself, and one's fur soon grew in to cover them.
When Basil finally spoke, there was a good deal of emotion in his voice, try as he would to suppress it. "We shall need some place to stay, where Toby can be comfortable while he recovers."
Normally, the hound slept outside, Basil's room being far too small for a dog. Now, whom could he impose upon on such short notice?

Esmeralda had made a tiny campfire, and heated some water over it. She used it with some of the herbs. before starting mixing the herbs, plants and water into an oinment.
Then she turned to the wounded dog, and patched up his other cut wounds, before lifting the oinment, pouring it into the wounds. Immediately the wounds stopped bleeding.
"This is only an oinment used to stop serious wounds from bleeding," she said calmly. "And to prevent future infections."
With experienced hands, she now quickly picked up other herbs and plants and poured water in them. She made some oinments, and wrapped them into a package that she offered Basil.
"These oinments should be smeared on Toby's face three times a day until the wounds are healed. If it isn't enough oinments, or if he get more wounds, you come to see me, and I will make you new ones."
When she heard Basil speak, she thought over his dilemma, and nodded. She wanted to keep an eye on her patient the first night after the operation, since the dog still might catch a fever because of the wound. And it was true that Lady Tremaine might start looking for Basil when she found out what he had done to her cat.
"I can offer you shelter in The Court of Miracles," she said. "It is not too far away, and I can keep an eye on Toby. The first 24 hours after an operation are often critical. I want to rest assured nothing will happen to him."

"By all means. Please, lead the way."
Basil had no idea where or what this Court of Miracles was. Perhaps a place of healing, from the name, where one sought miraculous cures.
Wherever it was, he would follow, as long as she took on the talk of carrying Toby.
"Miss Bianca, you are certainly under no obligation to accompany us. Your nerves have been severely tried by this ordeal, and it would be perfectly natural if you chose to return to your hotel for a much-needed rest."
Basil was very much impressed by her steadfastness in the face of danger, a quality some highly-refined ladies, such as she appeared to be, were lacking. However, he was uncertain how far the lovely mouse would go for those she had only met such a short time ago.
