Kovu's attempt at democracy failed miserably. The stranger pulled out his sword and looked ready to fight.
"And who is this lady of yours?" challenged Kovu, coming closer so his back paws were touching the bottom of the pond. But he was far enough that the man could not reach him. "She doesn't sound like a lady if she is hunting innocent gypsy girls."
Kovu had an idea of who Shan Yu was talking about, but decided not to push the man any further than he had to.
"And I have some advice for you," he continued to the hun. "I would drop that threat and leave at once. You may have a sword, but I am not without weapons just as mighty."

Esmeralda's eyes widened when she heard the strange man talk to her. Did he really think she was stupid enough to go on land when he threatened to kill her as soon as she got there? She rolled her eyes and mumbled to Kovu.
"He's not exactly a rocket scientist, is he?"
She was happy Kovu was here and protected her, like always. She knew her beloved lion was a skilled fighter. He had told her his mother had trained him to be a killer. Though he had always been gentle with her. She was grateful he never had used his power against her. She wanted to give him a hug, but couldn't embarass him with caresses in front of an enemy. Now when he protected his family, he needed to make a strong and tough impression. She had a suspicion that snuggling him in front of an enemy would not give the desired effect...

"I tried to warn you. Now on behalf of my lady I will remove you two."
With an evil grin like this is what he had been expecting and wanting Shan dashed toward Kovu. As his pace quickened he seemed like an animal chasing down his prey. His eyes almost glowing in nothingness, he then swung his sword at Kovu but missed him on purpose at the last moment.
"It wouldn't be fun if I killed you while you where unarmed lion."
Shan Yu then did something strange, he tossed his sword behind him and prepared to fight the lion again.
"In the will of Queen Tremaine, I will kill you, both of you."

A blue squirrel with a small Merlin-beard where peacefully jumping around from tree to tree. He stopped dead in tracks as it caught sight of a familiar hun down below, along with his apprentice and her beloved lion.
Merlin quietly climbed a bit closer, awaiting where the situation might go. When it didn`t turn out too well, and the hun dashed forward in an attack, a rain of acorn appeared out of nowhere, concentrating on the hun. Whoops. the shapeshifter, smiled angelic. Was that me? I`m so sorry, i really need to learn to watch were i lay my acorns. Despite his innocent smile there were a tone of irony in his voice.
One never know, next time it might be a coconut, his attitude changed slightly with his last comment. The wizard`s innocent looks still were on place, but in his voice there was a hidden threat, underlined with the wag of his tail, revealing the wand he held in it.
(Hope you guys don`t mind a nut throwing squirrel in your plot.?)

[[*tackles Merlin and licks him* I miss you old buddy!]]
Kovu smirked as Esmerelda whispered in his ear.
"That may be true," he said back, "but stay out here just in case. You're in charge of her, Djali," he added to the goat before moving towards the shore.
No sooner had he stepped onto dry land than the stranger attacked. He had very fast reflexes and Kovu was more than a little impressed. Suddenly a storm of acorns fell from the sky and onto the man. Kovu leapt back out of the way, looking around for the source of the nuts. He saw a squirrel on a tree branch with a beard.
How strange? the lion thought to himself.

Esmeralda hugged Kovu one last time before he went on land. She was always anxious he might get hurt or injured... or... worse. She couldn't imagine how her life would be if she had to live completely without him. Hadn't their separation been punishment enough?
"Be careful," she whispered, hugging him tightly before releasing him.
When she heard what Shan Yu said, her eyes narrowed.
"Lady Tremaine," she spat. "How did I know that evil old lizard was behind this?"
She gasped when the hun attacked, and grabbed hold of Djali, who wanted to swim to the shore to protect his brother Kovu. Suddenly acorns fell on Shan Yu from above, and Esmeralda lifted her gaze to the tree, to notice a blue squirrel with long white beard and a glimpse of mischief in his eyes. Her face brightened up by the sight of him, knowing that her teacher wouldn't allow anyone to hurt Kovu.
"MERLIN!!!" She squealed and jumped up and down in the water in joy.

Kovu looked at Esmerelda when she had called out.
"Merlin?" he repeated, confused. He looked back at the squirrel and began to see elements of the wizard's face. "It is. Thanks for the help, old friend."
The lion's eyes snapped down to the man and he approached cautiously. "Now, I want some answers from you," he growled. "What does Tremaine want with Esmerelda? What is she giving you to kill us?"

When the squirrel attacked him with nuts Shan did not move, something like that wouldn't hurt him.
"Lunch time" Shan said in a cold voice as the hawk flew up into the air and started to fly at the squirrel on the tree. He then turned his attention back to the lion an answered in his usual cold voice.
"Give? I don't need anything from my lady. She is very useful to me, and anyone who causes her trouble, causes me trouble. I am a warrior, the only things I need are allies who are useful. I would never let my guard down around anyone."

Esmeralda looked over at Shan. The acorn didn't seem to harm him any. Instead he released his hawk and the hawk started to fly at the squirrel in the tree. Esmeralda was a bit worried that Merlin might get injured, but on the other hand, she knew he was a great wizard. Her eyes pleaded Merlin to be careful before she turned her focus to Kovu again. She was worried he might get harmed.
Something in Shan Yu's words made Esmeralda burst out laughing.
"Your lady? Anyone who causes her trouble causes you trouble? Oooooooh - seems like someone is in love!!!" She taunted him. "Shan Yu and Tremmy sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!"
Djali bleated, as if he too was laughing at Esmeralda's joke. Esmeralda swam around in the lake, continuing to tease. Even if Shan Yu got angry and wanted to attack her, it might lead his attention away from Kovu, giving her lion friend an opportunity to attack.

"I don't have time for your jokes. I am a warrior, I have no use for love. You should at have some respect for who you are talking about. Someone like you doesn't even deserve to say Miss Tremaine's name."
Shan Yu was letting himself become distracted by the gypsies words. That was something he never did. He was a man who prided himself on being able to handle any situation. He had killed many, men, women, and children while they begged, or try to convince him of their usefulness. For some reason the word love really got under his skin, yet, he was unsure why it upset him so much.
Shan then seemed to relax a little and take in a deep breath. Calming himself down so he could prepare to attack again. There was no way he was going to let himself get distracted again.

Esmeralda chuckled with laughter by Shan Yu's words. For some reason they made him less scary to her.
"Everyone have use of love, Monsieur. Even warriors. Has it ever occured to you that love may not weaken you, but make you stronger? In times of darkness, you can find strength by looking into the eyes of someone you love, and find in yourself the strength you need to carry on."
Knowing her worth as an entertainer, she started singing, and her beautiful voice echoed over the lake. She looked at Shan Yu, to capture his attention, but each and every word of her song was dedicated to Kovu.
Everything I Do - I Do It For You (Bryan Adams)
Look into my eyes - you will see What you mean to me Search your heart - search your soul And when you find me there you'll search no more
Don't tell me it's not worth tryin' for You can't tell me it's not worth dyin' for You know it's true Everything I do - I do it for you
Look into your heart - you will find There's nothin' there to hide Take me as I am - take my life I would give it all - I would sacrifice
Don't tell me it's not worth fightin' for I can't help it - there's nothin' I want more Ya know it's true Everything I do - I do it for you
There's no love - like your love And no other - could give more love There's nowhere - unless you're there All the time - all the way
Oh - you can't tell me it's not worth tryin' for I can't help it - there's nothin' I want more I would fight for you - I'd lie for you Walk the wire for you - ya I'd die for you
Ya know it's true Everything I do - I do it for you

Kovu growled at the hawk as it took after the squirrel. He wanted to help but then remembered that Merlin was a great wizard and could handle himself. He turned his attention back on the Hun and his dislike for the man grew with every word he spoke. Tremaine sure was a twisted old woman to go along with this guy. First Clayton, now him . . .
The lion smirked to himself when Esmerelda teased Shan Yu, glad that she was out of harm's way for the moment. The gypsy had a way of saying the stuff that others were thinking but to embarassed to say outloud.
But she had better be careful, Kovu thought to himself. That sword looks painfully sharp.
As Shan Yu's words turned to insults for Esmerelda, the hair on Kovu's back rose in anger. He was tired of people putting Esme down because she was so different. So what if she was poor, lived on the streets and travelled with a goat? Kovu loved her anyway.

((Awwwww. Kovu is so cute!!! *melts and tackleglomps her favorite lion* ))
Esmeralda looked over at Kovu, her heart full of love for him. She was so afraid he might get injured. If something happened to him, she didn't want to live any more. Without him, her life was nothing. She was strong and daring as long as she had his love, and she knew she was getting her strength from her love for him. He was the only man who had never judged her for who she was on the outside. Esmeralda didn't care that he was a lion and she was a human. She loved him anyway. A love that went beyond all physical love, and was much stronger. Everlasting. Even if she knew they could never be. But that only made her love him more.
She watched how the hair on his back rose in anger by Shan Yu's words, and she hoped that he wouldn't get harmed. She held Djali in a firm grip, because the tiny goat wanted to go to land and help his brother in the fight he felt would happen soon. Esmeralda looked pleadingly at Kovu, her emerald eyes filled with tears and love for him.
"Be careful, my love," she whispered, knowing that Kovu's sharp ears would pick up the love in her words for him.

"I do not take advice from animals or gypsies. Love only leads to jealousy and irrational thinking. Things that I can never afford to have. I will do whatever I need to do. My lady likes to play with her victims far to much. Getting rid of you enemies is the only way. I am a warrior I do not play games."
Now calm again, Shan Yu raised his weapon again. His eyes where focused on Kovu, the only real threat to him in a fight. Without wasting any motions he swung his sword at Kovu once again, this time it was the real thing.

Kovu lept back to avoid Shan Yu's blade, his paws splayed in a fighting stance as he released a powerful roar. He unsheathed his claws and gnashed his teeth. If this soldier wanted to fight, Kovu would welcome the challenge.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Esmerelda in the water, restraining gallent Djali from coming to his friend's aide. He wondered how long she would be safe there.
"Merlin, get Esme out of here!" he cried to the little squirrel as he continued to dodge the hun.
He didn't want a direct fight until the gypsy was gone. He didn't want to worry about her safety, her worrying about his or to see the bloody results of a lion attack.
