Wearing shorts and a t-shirt in place of her usual coveralls, Gadget surveyed the preparations with satisfaction. Everything was ready for her backyard cook-out in honor of the Fourth of July.
It was the first party of any kind Gadget had given since coming to Disney World, and she was a little nervous. "I hope everything goes okay," she said to herself. She said it to herself because nobody else had shown up.
"Maybe nobody's coming," she lamented, turning the hamburgers and hot dogs as they sizzled on the grill. "How'm I gonna eat all this by myself?"

Edna looked around the place seeing the many people around carrying mini flags of the USA as she looked a bit bored yet a bit curious, Knowing it was a bit hot she had a casual wear of a green short sleeve and pants rather than her usual fashion outfit. "Hmmm if my memory serves me right today is the fourth of the month of July ah yes the celebration of bright fireworks and good traditional cookouts and such" The fashion designer said when suddenly a scent caught her attention. "Say now where is that fine smell coming from?" She followed it until she reached the location where the lady mouse Gadget was there whom she met a few times. "Why hello there nice to see you again."

Arthur didn't quite understand why everyone was celebrating the Fourth of July. Of course, this was understandable, seeing as he was a sixth century English king and all. Even so, when Gadget told him she was planning to hold a cook-out, Arthur was more than happy to help out. He couldn't thank her enough for her kind generosity, taking him in after Kopa abandoned him; really, she was like the mother he never had.
As the mouse tended to the grill, Arthur was setting out plates, cups, napkins, and silverware. They certainly couldn't eat with their bare hands, could they? As the boy worked, he heard Gadget begin to catastrophize about the cook out. "Don't worry, Ma'am. It'll be alright. I'm sure it's going to be wonderful." he said reassuringly. Soon after he said that, a tiny woman with ebony hair and large spectacles (she reminded him of Merlin for a moment) came into the yard. The woman greeted Gadget, apparently knowing her. Arthur smiled at the woman, greeting her and introducing himself at the same time. "Hello, Ma'am. Welcome to Miss Gadget's cook out. My name's Arthur. It's very nice to meet you."

Gadget was thrilled that Arthur came by to help. A family outing was just what he needed. Even if he didn't have any family, it would do him good.
"Thanks for putting out all those things. Would you get the watermelon out of the cooler, please? I'm gonna have to slice it." Doing chores builds character, she thought to herself, so she'd have to make sure Arthur did his share.
Before Gadget could get to the melon, a guest arrived. "Hi, Edna! It's great to see you again!" She hadn't forgotten Edna's kindness in making her a dress.
"Do you know Arthur?"

Basil soon came into view, riding atop Toby. The detective felt he ought to bring some sort of contribution to the day's comestibles, so Toby carried a six-pack of Coke in his teeth.
He had never been to a 'cook-out' before and wasn't quite sure what to expect.
Ah, there was Miss Gadget, looking quite fetching, talking with several humans.
Basil bowed formally to Arthur. "My leige," he said reverently.
Toby, on the other hand, put down the soda and jumped up to lick the young king's face.
"Toby!" Basil scolded. "Down! Bad dog!" One ought not to take such liberites with royalty.

Edna turned to see the boy known as Arthur and greeted back at him with a grin. "Well now nice to meet you too Arthur." She then turned to her friend Gadget who was about to take care of a melon.
"Excuse me but do you need any help in cutting that?"

When Basil arrived, Gadget began to feel a little more relaxed. Maybe enough people would come to make the cook-out a success after all.
The little mouse introduced Basil to Edna, though he seemed to know Arthur already. "Thanks for bringing the Coke. That was really thoughtful."
She patted the overly-friendly hound. "Golly, I didn't know you had a dog."
"That'd be teriffic," she answered gratefully. It wasn't easy cutting a piece of fruit that was bigger than your whole body.
Now Gadget was able to pay more attention to the grill. She wasn't much of a cook, but she could manage simple meat-and-potatoes-type foods. She'd even made cupcakes with red, white and blue sprinkles.
Trouble was, sometimes Gadget's cooking had a distinct machine-oil taste. She really should be more careful about using the same utensils in the kitchen and the workshop.

"Delightful hang on a sec" Edna said as she picked up the cutting utensil and took a careful swipe cutting the melon without making a mess. As she was cutting the melon she noticed the dog was looking at Edna which made her a bit perplexed

Toby was terribly interested in all the proceedings, as they had to do with food. He could smell all sorts of interesting things. But how to get some for himself?
He took a closer look at Edna as she cut into something. Something good to eat, perhaps?
Toby sat up on his hind legs to get a better sniff at whatever she had. In this position, he was almost as tall as the diminuitive woman.
He snuffed with all his might in an attempt to sort out the various odors.

Arthur smiled at Gadget and nodded. "Yes, Ma'am." he said, hurrying off to go fetch the melon. When he returned, he placed it on the table. Edna greeted him and turned to help Gadget before Basil appeared with his dog. The dog had brought bottles of some dark liquid in his mouth. The boy counted six of them. Before Arthur could ask what they were, Basil greeted him. "It's nice to see you again, Sir!" the young king replied cheerfully. The dog then jumped on him and began to furiously lick his face. Apparently, his name was "Toby."
When the detective scolded Toby, Arthur petted the dog gently. "Oh, it's alright! He's just like Sir Ector's dogs." Toby got a pet from Gadget before leaving the boy and began sniffing around. Arthur was happy as Edna began to cut the melon. He then walked up to Gadget. "Is there anything else I can do, Ma'am?" he asked.

Gadget was proud to see Arthur so willing to work. Maybe he'd had enough chores for now.
"Thanks, but I think everything's ready now. You'd better have something to eat. And no junk food," she added sternly. "Well, maybe just a little, since it is a holiday."
Gadget hopped down to the bottles of soda Toby had left on the ground, twisting the top off of one. "Do you like Coke? You can have one with your hot dog."

As Edna finished up cutting the melons she looked around wondering where the napkins were and as she did the dog was a bit close to her by surprise. "Ahh what the well now you got me by surprise what is it?" She asked the friendly looking dog who seemed to noticed the chopped up melon. "Oh you want a piece of the melon?"

Toby didn't understand what 'melon' was, but if it was food, he wanted it. The hound sat up on his hind legs, tongue hanging out, and tried to look cute enough to get a treat.
Meanwhile, Basil observed Gadget and His Majesty King Arthur together with one eyebrow raised quizzically. They seemed to have quite an odd relationship. Did she understand that the lad she was oredering gently scolding was the rightful king?
At any rate, the detective now understood the meaning of the term 'cook-out.' It was on the order of that party of Panchito's he'd once attended, though the advantage of cooking out-of-doors escaped him.

Arthur was never fond of doing chores, but didn't mind at all doing them for Gadget. He was use to them by now, having done them in excess under Sir Ector and Kay. The mouse told him that he was done for now, but also told him to eat and stay away from junk food. The boy had come to understand that "junk food" was foods that weren't particularly good for you. Having seen the foods Sir Ector ate, Arthur had caught on fairly quickly. He was getting more use to these modern times with every passing day.
"You're welcome. And don't worry, Ma'am - I will." he replied softly. When asked if he wanted a coke with his hot dog, Arthur thought for a moment and nodded. "Yes, please." The young king wondered how safe this "Coke" would be to drink, but he trusted Gadget's judgement. As for a hot dog, Arthur had had one only once, but it was one of the most delectable things he'd ever had. The boy made a mental note to introduce both to his country when he returned.

Edna watched the dog looking cute as it stood up on the hind legs as she just smiled a bit. "Oh alright here you go" She said as she took a piece of the fruit and handed it for him to eat.
