Esmeralda looked over at the stepsisters, their ugly faces, and their far-from-enchanting demeanour. She lifted her eyebrow sarcastically and looked at Djali, and he looked back at her the exact same way.
"It seems like someone forgot to look in their mirror when they woke up this morning," Esmeralda replied calmly.
When she noticed the brunette pounding against the door, she rolled her eyes, wondering how stupid a person could be.
"Suuuuuuuuuure," she chided ironically. "That will make them let you in."
She studied the ornate with interest. Once again she missed Doctor Doppler. He would have been smart enough to tell her what all these ornates meant. But now she was here, stuck with the Marx sisters. She sighed deeply, stroking over the bracelet Doppler had given her.
Where ever you are now, Doppler, I miss you dearly. I would rather have you around than the Marx sisters.
When Anastasia placed one hand against the door, the carvings lit up, the lines spreading with light. Esmeralda studied the carvings with interest, trying to think like she had done with Doctor Doppler.
"Well, of course. That's IT!" she said. "Only the two owners of the badge can open the door."
She led Djali to the door, and gave him a signal. Djali looked at his owner. Then he stood on two legs, and placed one of his tiny front hooves at the ornament on the other half of the door.
