The sun was slowly rising over the park. A figure was sitting on the edge of the tallest tower, soaking in the warmth of the sun as the breeze gently whipped through her dark hair. She wasn't sure how many more sunrises she'd be able to see, and she wanted to take in as much of it as possible. Beside her, a stone gargoyle was kneeling on the ledge, looking as if he were in deep thought, his chin resting upon his fist.
"I know what I'm doing, Goliath." Elisa whispered, placing her hand on the gargoyle's shoulder. "This is what I want."

"Elisa, think about what you're saying." Goliath pleaded. "What you'd be giving up."
"What, you think I just jumped into this idea without thinking?" Elisa said angrily. "I've made up my mind."
"Elisa, it's too rash."
"Goliath, you're not hearing me." Elisa said. "I'm going to ask Esmeralda for a spell to turn me into a gargoyle."
Goliath sighed and turned away. Elisa took a moment to calm herself before walking over to face Goliath. His eyes were closed, his arms folded across his chest. Elisa sighed, and reached up to place a small hand on his cheek. She waited until Goliath opened his eyes.
"Goliath, I love you." Elisa said softly, though she poured her very heart into every word. "I can't imagine living my life without you, this is the only way you and I can truly be together."
"But why must you be the one to sacrifice your life for me?" Goliath asked.
"This is hardly what I'd call a sacrifice, Goliath. I'd be living my life with you, and the rest of the clan."
"But your life as a police officer, your family..."
"I can still protect the city as a gargoyle, even more so than I could as a human. As for my family..." Elisa had to admit that this was the only thing that was making her decision hard, but even that wouldn't be able to stop her. "They've always wanted my happiness. And it's not like I'd never be able to see them again."
Goliath sighed again.
"What if I became human for you?" He asked.
"Goliath, you and I both know that wouldn't work." Elisa said. "I can still have some form of the life I have now as a gargoyle, but you as a human... The clan, Angela, you wouldn't be able to have the same relationship with them that you have now. You can't abandon them, not even for me."
"Have you spoken to your family yet?" Goliath asked.
"I'm meeting them later tonight." Elisa answered.
"Should I be there?"
"Thank you, but no." Elisa replied. "This is going to be hard enough, it'll be better if I just explain it myself."
Goliath didn't speak for a long moment. He closed his eyes again, while Elisa waited for him to say what was on his mind. Just when Elisa thought she'd snap from the silence, Goliath finally opened his eyes. He took her hand into his talon, placing a gentle kiss on her palm.
"You know that I love you, too." Goliath said. "If this is truly what you want, then nothing will make me happier than to be able to soar with you at my side."
Elisa beamed and hugged Goliath tightly, smiling as his wings wrapped around her.

Elisa watched below her as the gates of the park opened, and families walked in, ready to enjoy the day with each other. She thought back to the time where her parents had saved up enough money to take the entire family on a road trip, not telling her or her siblings where they were headed.
On the day that they would be going to the park, their parents surprised them with Disney costumes. A Tinkerbell costume for Elisa, an Aurora costume for Beth, and for Derek, an Eric costume. It was then that the Maza siblings put two and two together, and jumped up and down with joy before hugging their parents.
Elisa smiled at the memory. It was only one of a thousand that she would cherish always.

In her apartment, Elisa removed the pot of tea from the stove as she heard a knock on her door.
"It's open!" she called, and her father, mother, and Beth stepped inside.
"How are you, dear?" Diane asked, hugging Elisa.
"I'm fine, Mom." Elisa said.
"What's going on, Elisa?" Peter asked after hugging his daughter.
"Yeah, you sounded really serious when you called us." Beth said.
"Let's wait for Derek." Elisa said.
No sooner than Elisa spoke, Derek swooped down onto her balcony. Elisa had left the window open for him, and he stepped inside.
"Hey everyone." Derek called.
More hugs and greetings were shared as the family took their seats in Elisa's living room.
"Well Elisa?" Peter prompted.
Elisa grinned to herself. Her father was always straight and to the point.
"Alright, here it goes." Elisa said. "I've made a decision. I have a friend who knows magic. I'm going to ask her to turn me into a gargoyle."
Elisa had never heard such stunned silence. She continued to speak before she lost her nerve.
"I'm in love with Goliath. I've tried denying it, but... I can't lie to myself anymore, nor can I lie to him. Me being a gargoyle is the only way he and I can be together."
She looked at Peter. "I've handed in my resignation to Captain Chavez. I'm not sure when it'll happen, but... I'm going to do it."
Elisa took a deep breath when she realized she hadn't breathed since she began speaking. She looked at her family nervously until Beth suddenly grinned.
"Well it's about time." She said. "We were all wondering when you'd finally come around."
Elisa could not have been more shocked if Beth slapped her.
"What?"
"Oh come on, darling." Diane said, also smiling. "We saw you and Goliath together. Did you honestly think we couldn't tell?"
Elisa was currently doing an excellent impression of a beached fish gasping for air.
"Wha... What?"
Peter chuckled. "Your mother's right, Elisa. We could tell the feelings you and Goliath had."
He stood and embraced his daughter.
"We just want you to be happy."
Beth and Diane joined the hug.
"Just promise you'll still visit us." Diane said.
Tears were now streaming down Elisa's face.
"I promise." She said.
Elisa pulled away from her family and looked over to Derek. So far, her younger brother had not said a word. Elisa sighed. She knew that, while adjusted to it, Derek had never asked to become a gargoyle. Now here she was, giving up her life as a human willingly, when he would give anything to be human again.
"Elisa... This is what you want?"
"More than anything." Elisa answered.
"Then..." Derek paused, before striding over to his big sister and embracing her. "Then I'm happy for you."
"Thank you." she whispered.

Elisa made her way down through the castle. It was time to meet Esmeralda.
